Newsletter Highlights - Cannabis Edition

Well, the 2016 Nov-Dec Four Leg Newsletter was a fun and interesting one for me to write.  It’s all about cannabis.  I’ve had owners ask me about it, tell me their using it, and even provided me some to try on my Sheltie that has seizures.  (It’s been working like a ‘hot damn’ for her by the way!  She’s back to how she used to be and on a ½ dose of her seizure-meds!)

So, for this blog, I just wanted to give you some highlights from the newsletter:

  • CBD stands for cannabidiol – this is the medicinal & therapeutic part of marijuana (or hemp)
  • THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol – this is the psychotropic part of marijuana, which is virtually non-existent in hemp.
  • Your body has cannabinoid receptors / animal bodies have cannabinoid receptors.
  • The therapeutic potential of cannabinoids (CBD)s has been demonstrated in the treatment of many disorders including pain, inflammation, cancer, asthma, glaucoma, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, hypertension, myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, depression or feeding-related disorders, and many others.
  • Rodent studies have shown beneficial effects of cannabinoids in these animals have been reported e.g. for disorders of the cardiovascular system, cancer treatment, pain treatment, disorders of the respiratory system or metabolic disorders.
  • Other benefits have been shown for helping with pain and inflammation, glaucoma, skin conditions, & infections.
  • There are studies showing beneficial effects for osteoarthritis in rats & mice.
  • Cannabinoids could also help with gastroesophageal reflux, fracture healing, disc disease, & epilepsy.
  • Did you know that in Bhutan, marijuana grows wild and is more common than regular grass?  However, virtually no one smokes it. Instead it is the number one source of feed for pigs!

You may want to start learning about it, because your owners are!  Check out this article from Dogs Naturally Magazine.

There you go, that’s a wrap for this wild and crazy blog post!

Until next time… Cheers!
