Syringomyelia...

Hello Laurie!

Hope life is treating you well and - that you're not overworking your wonderful self!

Do you have any special neuro physio thoughts about treating cavaliers with Chiari Malformation & Syringomyelia?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

You're doing SO brilliantly with Fourleg.com!!

Best wishes

Kindest regards

JM

Hey JM!

As for the syringomyelia cavaliers... such a shame.  I do try some gentle manual therapy for the C/S... dural traction, some craniosacral... but really, there isn't much that we can fix.  I've not tried any of the pain management stuff... (I wonder if a TENS machine would help at all).

Quite frankly, I don't know what we could treat.  The target tissue is a too small skull to fit the brain.  The symptoms are pain and/or uncontrolled itching/scratching.  I don't know that we can target any of those things in this scenario.

Behavioural modification?  Are there activities that set off the signs?

Would massage have an effect on the autonomic nervous system and subsequently dampen the SM manifestations.  Same goes for craniosacral or acupuncture.

You know... perhaps I'll use this as next week's blog and ASK the question of others... see if anyone is having success!

Cheers,

Laurie

Hello Laurie

So Many thanks for your thoughts on Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia, and my great apologies for delay.

These neuro problems that powerfully beset the cavalier breed are certainly tough and, at times of the acute flare up are (emotionally) torrid ones too.

Both of the two current cavaliers have been seen by Clare Rusbridge who is a superb and excellent neurologist - and they're fortunately under her ongoing care.

I'm glad your thoughts are similar to mine - so will continue, and keep you in the loop.

Cheers,

Julia
