Re: Brachial Plexus avulsion in a 5 mos old Golden
So a "pupdate" for you on the 6 month old Goldie. She is doing well just being a 6 month old Golden, has gained 10 pounds since I started with her, and she seems happy and is rambunctious. She greets me at her door, but once we lie down to assess, do ROM or other she wants OUT of it! I sort of have the feeling that she is ready to move on, and she may be right. At this point I am reviewing a home program with her owner and now seeing her 1x a week to check in and eyeball her, but will be on an as-needed basis for when/if there is a change plus or minus. I am not confident that she will get any return but you never know. I am interested to hear any thoughts, recommendations for Three Leggers out there, who still have their 4th limb though non functional. In her case, front left which bounces along with her in flexion and does not bother her in any way pain, sensations or otherwise. But, it could potentially get caught, stuck or injured somehow. Owners are not ready to consider amputation, but how about a sling for support while going on leash walks or playing with other dogs? Are there other tripod suggestions I can offer owner? She has been a great patient and I learned a lot from her and her family. Thanks!

My thoughts?
If the leg is not in the way or getting injured, then I'm not sure I'd worry about it. Amputation can always be decided upon at a later date should things change.
I have only had a handful of 3-legged dogs with the 4th leg being non-functional, and they do use it. Like a prop at times (i.e. in sternal), or a balancing aid, or to help with initiation of getting up from side lie.
The 'potential for injury' is much the same argument used for removing dewclaws, docking tails, and even ear cropping (yep, I've heard it all).
So my two cents is see how she does with it.
And I agree with you that at this point... I'm doubtful it will come back. But you certainly put in great effort!
Cheers, Laurie
