Discussion related to the musculoskeletal system - injuries, post-op, lameness, extremity issues (joint, muscle, tenon, fascia...), axial skeleton issues, etc., as it relates to canine rehabilitation.

Laser for Fracture Healing

Post by K9Rehab »

Trying to find a "protocol" if one exists and laser and fracture healing. I've been referred a case of a 7 year old Kelpie with a comminuted fracture of her ulna after a dog bite. She has been splinted for 5 weeks and there is no callus formation happening. Vet is hoping laser will help.... would love guidance on dosing and frequency of treatment (and your experiences where this helped). On a separate note owner is asking whether any supplements could possibly help - already on glucosamine and inflavonoid (curcumin).

Here's what I've found in the literature re: laser and bone healing.

LASER and BONE HEALING
• Rabbit dental implant study – tested 5, 10, & 20J/cm2
of GaAlAs laser (830nm, 50mW) applied Q48hr x 13
days. = 20J/cm2 was best, 10J/cm2 was second best! Gomes et al 2015

• Tibial fracture study – tested 850nm, 100 mW, 8 J/cm2,
64 s x 10 days. = expedited bone repair (histologically &
radiographically) Briteño-Vázquez et al 2015

• Femoral osteotomy study – tested 830nm, 50mW, 6J
(single point) x Q48hrs x 7, 15, & 21 days = significant
increase in bone formation at day 7 (but no significant
differences at days 15 or 21. Batista et al 2015

And from the Batista study... (see the pic below with the different study details).

But I'd laser at least twice the amount you think or even 3 - 5 x the amount!

In regards to supplement... I'm hoping someone else will pipe up on that before I have to do a search...

Thanks Laurie,
I have been lasering 2x/week because really that's as frequent as the owner and I can get together. She is set to repeat radiographs next week which will put her at 8 weeks post fracture and 3 weeks since the last radiograph was taken. Will see what it looks like.....

Hey Laurie!

I'm conducting a brief review (for my own interest :geek: ) of the doses reported by Batista et al (2015) in their Table 1, and so far it doesn't look pretty...

I'll tidy up the spreadsheet to show all calculated/corrected parameters for each of the referenced papers, and post that info when complete.

Cheers!
