Heat/Ice protocol for IVDD dogs

Post by michellemason »

I know LEH has a protocol floating around out there for heat/ice therapy on IVDD dogs (I think it's 30 seconds heat/ 30 seconds heat repeated for 10 minutes??)...I can't find it on the rehab listserve or on the Fourleg site...can anyone help please?

Hi Michelle!

Okay, so the hot-cold 'switching' is more of a protocol for a swollen limb to help flush out swelling. I've not used it for IVDD... but it's actually a decent idea if the dog tolerates it.

So, you are correct, it was a 30 seconds cold, 30 seconds hot, alternating for about 10 minutes or so. Typically starting and ending on cold.

This would certainly help with blood flow to and through the area... which is what all of our modalities are essentially doing when treating a spinal cord dysfunction (Laser, Acupuncture, PEMF...).

I can see no harm, and plenty of potential for benefit.

Great question!
