Post Total Hip Replacement

Discussion related to the musculoskeletal system - injuries, post-op, lameness, extremity issues (joint, muscle, tenon, fascia...), axial skeleton issues, etc., as it relates to canine rehabilitation.

Post Total Hip Replacement

Post by URUGUAY »

I need some guidelines on rehabilitating a post Total Hip Replacement. He is 3 weeks post surgery, coming today for the first evaluation.
Laurie, I did read your guidelines on Management of the post-operative canine hip, and I have an idea where to start.
My question, which exercises of movements I should avoid in these cases?

Hey!

Okay, so avoiding abduction and external rotation would be key.

I would allow easy exercise early on. From what the human literature tells us, it could be that late stage rehab is perhaps as if not more important to prevent problems due to gluteal weakness and/or adductor tightening.

And I would add to be sure that the owners are very cautious about what they let their dog do - (no jump, run, slipping or sliding...) We had one a number of years ago where the owners were just a little too nonchalant and the dog suffered implant loosening.

Cheers,

Laurie
