Basic PT Concepts

Post by lehughes »

Hi Laurie,

I have told you before how I cannot thank you enough for your website. I was wondering if there is a review training of the basic PT concepts and terms. I feel like I apply the techniques but want to truly understand what I am doing.

I want to become an "expert" so I want deep understanding and applications.

Thanks,
A

Hi A.!

So, I’m attaching a document that I created 16 years ago. It doesn’t deal with everything you ask about, but it does touch on some thing.

I honestly believe it’s much harder for non-PTs to jump into the ‘thought processing’ in regards to animal rehab than it is for the PT.
It’s the way we’ve been trained to look at things. So I’m starting this off here.

Beyond that, terminology & concepts! Pow! It’s like asking for a brief review of Vet Medicine, or Engineering, or Education, or Culinary arts. Big topics!

So, I’m going to start by directing you to some basic PT resources - and then post this question on the FourLeg Forum to see if other PTs will chime in.

1. The Rehabilitation Specialist’s Handbook - Rothstein, Roy, & Wolf (Looks like there is actually a newer version 2010 - Roy, Wolf & Scalzitti)

Okay, I take it back. I stood in front of my book shelves to see what other ‘all encompassing’ books there might be to recommend, and honestly, the rest just take you down paths into the various aspects of physical therapy, techniques, trains of thought.

Honestly, it’s one big reason why I created the website. To review basics and have a platform to learn more. I’m glad you like it!!

Okay, so check on the forum in the next week or two to see if anyone has chimed in with additional info.

For me, I know that I have started a terminology listing years ago and on several different occasions… but you almost end up rewriting a medical dictionary. So I’ve stopped every time!

Cheers!

Laurie

Hey Laurie,

Thanks for the resources you’ve shared. I’m new to your platform and I was wondering if you had a document of common medical abbreviations often found on vet reports. That’s one thing I still struggle with now sometimes. There always seems to be a new one to discover! I know you said a document of terminology would end up like a medical dictionary, but would you be able to share some commonly used abbreviations in vet med if you haven’t already and I’ve missed it? Thanks!

Okay... I guess I'll have to start creating something! Abbreviations gets us all - (in both directions!)

Hi Laurie,

Thanks for taking this initiative in compiling some common abbreviations. What was the outcome? Sorry if I missed it 🙈!
