Just starting out

Post by evasilop »

Hello,

I am a RVT just starting out in rehab after graduating from a rehab program and I am looking for recommendations for good sources of info like Fourleg. I already have the canine rehab and physical therapy (millis, levine) text and am going to attend the 2018 IAVRPT conference, but I am looking for recommendations for inexpensive books, websites or CE that would be helpful for someone just beginning their career in rehab. I am particularly interested in finding any resources that have gait videos of both abnormal and normal animals of various breeds of dogs, as well as sports medicine and regenerative medicine.

Thanks in advance,

Emelia

Hi Emelia!

Welcome to the field of canine rehab!

So, lets start with the book question. In addition to what you have, you might also want to check out:

Animal Physiotherapy - McGowan & Goff (Totally biased, b/c I wrote the canine orthopaedic rehab chapter)
https://www.amazon.ca/Animal-Physiother ... dpSrc=srch

Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation - Zink & VanDyke
https://www.amazon.com/Canine-Sports-Me ... al+therapy

Physical Rehabilitation for Veterinary Technicians & Nurses - Goldberg & Tomlinson
https://www.amazon.com/Physical-Rehabil ... al+therapy

Practical Physiotherapy for Small Animal Practice - Prydie & Hewitt
https://www.amazon.com/Practical-Physio ... al+therapy

SECRET: Go onto Google Scholar and see if you can read chapters of these for free! Shhh!

Then there are mine - available on the Discounts section on the FourLeg Member's Side.
My Basic Manual Assessment and Treatment of the Canine Axial Skeleton (about manual therapy for the canine spine) & Successful Practitioners in Canine Rehabilitation & Physiotherapy (about getting started, lots of different perspectives, what worked, what didn't, etc. This one is also available on Amazon.)

Okay... so that covered you for most of what's out there / comprehensive in the book category.

For Websites... I'm biased. You'll find more on this website than anywhere else!
For additional education look at OnlinePetHealth: https://onlinepethealth.com/ for monthly webinars.

For Gait Analysis. I like the book- Dog Steps
https://www.amazon.ca/Dogsteps-understa ... t+analysis
I found it very useful. The video bores me to tears!

So I went online to look at YouTube. There are some good ones there!

https://youtu.be/PVvZKcKBTtg An Animated one - on normal gait

https://youtu.be/eqBcBsmMQVA Shout out to CARE Animal Clinic Brookfield... awesome job on this! Again normal gait patterns.

And here's one I found on canine lameness. I assume it must be good because it game up all over the place when I typed it in! (Admittedly, I've not watched the whole thing.)

I will say, there aren't a lot of great gait videos out there. I have one that I learned from back when I started. It was made by the Ontario Veterinary College back in about 1980. I had it on VHS tape! It was EXCELLENT - by Geoffrey Sumner Smith. 3 parts. I've never seen it reproduced in digital form anywhere. Looks like there's a need for this kind of education!

I hope this helps to get you going / get you started!

All the best!
