SHOCKWAVE & LUMBOSACRAL DISC DISEASE

Post by lehughes »

Laurie

Hope Christmas was reasonably uneventful and you are huddling by a heater staying warm these days.  We are just happy our snow is all melting here!!  You guys are freezing your butts off!!

So I just watched your video on LS disease and using shockwave.  Must admit it gives me the shivers shock waving a sensitive disc but you are the expert.  Is there any contraindications for using it?  I have 2 cases that just won’t get 100% better.  One has an MRI diagnosis of bulging disc at L-S and the other was diagnosed with stenosis and bulging disc via MRI.  Neither time did the surgeon push surgery and in the first case actually talked the owner out of it

They are both doing OK and seem to be mostly pain free but just can’t get that consistent return to normal.  The first one is a pretty nervous dog and we can’t really do any manual work on her but I have started placing needles and leaving the room and she seems to tolerate it.  There is a colleague here that is CRI trained and she has a mobile practice with shockwave that we have used a bit so I do have access to it.

Thoughts??

It is ridiculously cold here!  BUT… we’re to be above zero by Wednesday!

Okay, now as for the L-S disease & shockwave:  I first learned of this when over in the UK and visiting Noel Fitzpatrick’s veterinary facility.  When touring their post-op / ICU ward, I saw on the kennels "L-S Shockwave”.   When I asked about it, I was told that they were dogs in for shockwave on the lumbosacral junction.  I asked what the results were, and was told that Noel was quite pleased with the results.  So I went home and decided to try it out on two of my less than 100% recovered L-S disc disease patients. What did I have to lose… they were sort of malingerers, like those you describe.  Long story short, it seemed to be the magical elixir!  The dogs totally turned a corner with it.
Since then I have used it as part of a protocol for all of my lumbo-sacral disc disease patients.  I find that it helps… but because of the nature of the disease, I may need to use it periodically whenever these dogs flare up.  They tolerate it quite well.
I think the Radial Shockwave is really quite safe!  There are very few contraindications!  I think of it as a way to reduce pain and stimulate blood flow to deeper tissues.
What I can also say is that when you have a sore area (i.e. my hips), and start using shockwave to treat, it is almost ‘Pavlovian’ in it’s effects.  Instant endorphin release!
We’ve not had an adverse effect in the last 4+ years of using it!

So, I’d say give it a whirl!  The poor nervous dog will just need to deal with it… or give her something to chill her out a bit before using it.

And Happy New Year!!!
