Neuro S & S from Lyme Disease?

Post by lehughes »

Hey Laurie, hope all is well up north. I wish I was up at the Stampede with our friends at the Dog Bowl. Question for you, have you ever seen a case of a dog with neurological signs/symptoms secondary to lyme disease? Bet you don't get a ton of that up there, it's rampant down here. I evaluated a dog at a local rescue (I shared his photo yesterday) He really looks like a wobblers kind of dog, front limbs collapse at the carpus (bilateral) and his back end has slow CPs, Musculature is actually good . The rescue says they have had him looked at by a vet (doubt it was neuro) and xrays of the neck show no abnormalities. I couldn't appreciate much besides increased tone through the cervical spine. No real pain response, less than stellar mobility through the C-spine. She says the vet said his symptoms are due to "bad lyme disease" As far as I know, he has not been treated for the lyme, and in the 5-6 months that he's been at the rescue, no significant changes (positive or negative). I want to work with him a bit, but was curious if you've seen such neuro symptoms secondary to lyme. Now, could this have been distemper? Who knows? Gotta love rescue dogs and their mysterious past.

Ugh... what a crap shoot! So, if it's Lyme, then I would think there should be an additional test to confirm. (Wracking my brain right now... not sure the tests are always definitive). And then of course, some form of treatment... (I can't recall if I've ever seen one of these. I can't think of a specific dog however. So maybe not.)

If it's old Distemper, then I have actually seen 2 or 3 of these. They look a bit like wobblers... all 4 limbs affected. Basically, with either of these scenarios, from a rehab perspective... It's all neuro rehab and repatterning / retraining of normal movement. Nothing manual needed. No modalities. All movement training. And then it's a cross your fingers and see how much recovers.

Then of course, if the neck stuff... well there again - you may or may not have neck pain. MRI, X-rays may or may not give you answers. So, you might need to just go with your gut & analysis of breed / age.

Good luck!
