I was just looking at a VOSM video where Deb Canapp is using a portable ultrasound unit that straps on the back leg. She says it speeds up bone healing.
They send it home with the owner I think. I am wondering if anyone is familiar with this.Who makes it and how expensive and does it really help?
I have been to VOSM on several occasions and taking classes there and have never seen it so wonder if it is something new?
Also, I need to brush up on ultrasound stuff as I don't use it much but I forgot that it stimulates bone healing?
Laurie- please weigh in!

Re: Portable ultrasound unit for TPLO post op use
These would be specific bone healing devices LIPUS - they are a specific kind... so not our therapeutic ultrasound units. I've never used one (human or animal). Let me see if I can at least find a picture / website with a picture...

I hope this helps. From what I understand it is different than our therapeutic ultrasounds. I even found a letter to the editor pertaining to an ultrasound review that questions whether our therapeutic U/S could even dial down to the levels that the LIPUS machines get to. See below:
The lead article on “The effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound therapy on time to fracture healing: a meta-analysis” by Busse et al is an excellent article. What it does not state is that physiotherapists use therapeutic ultrasound; low-intensity pulsed ultrasound or LIPUS is a special ultrasound machine that is not found in physiotherapy departments or clinics. There has been little evidence to date that demonstrates the use of a regular therapeutic ultrasound unit (like most physiotherapists use) that would be able to produce the same results as Busse et al because of the difference in power and frequency of the LIPUS unit.
I hope this helps a little... at least to get you searching further anyways!
Cheers,
Laurie
