Laser for post-op amputation

Hi all,

I'm relatively new to rehab. My dog had her LH amputated (at the coxofemoral joint) on Friday. She is currently on gabapentin, rimadyl, and tramadol but I am worried about pain. She refuses to lay on the amputated side, and if she does she jumps up right away...I'm assuming this is a fairly normal reaction post-op? I want to laser the area where I assume all the cut muscle ends are but I was wondering what everyone would recommend for settings? We have the Cutting Edge MLS Mphi. 2 days ago, I used the acute inflammation setting at 8 J/cm2 as a starting point but I'm not having much luck finding suggestions for settings. Thoughts?

Hi Michelle,

I'm sorry about your poor pup!

So, you are good to go with laser, and 8J/cm2 is a good start. Higher doses in the acute phase are better for pain relief. So I would laser every square inch around the hip region at that dose - holding it in place on each spot. You could even laser twice a day to help.

Additionally, any cold compresses or ice wrapped in a damp dish towel might also be helpful.

You're on the right track! Good luck!
