Lateral Rotation after lateral suture repair

Discussion related to the musculoskeletal system - injuries, post-op, lameness, extremity issues (joint, muscle, tenon, fascia...), axial skeleton issues, etc., as it relates to canine rehabilitation.

Lateral Rotation after lateral suture repair

Post by puppylove »

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

I am working with a 6 week post op cruciate repair (lateral suture tech with menisectomy) that refuses to straighten her gait. The injury occurred a few months prior to repair so atrophy is pronounced. She weight bears at a walk, off loads slightly at a stance, and carries at anything more than a slow walk. She seems to be rotating out at the hip. Both rears have somewhat of a bowed appearance (client states normal for her). I do not have a water or land treadmill (yet) and we are hours away from a place I could refer her to. Clients have been diligent with restrictions, sit to stands, hills (with sit to stands), cavalettis, core strengthening, etc. The surgeon says the stifle repair is very stable. I can elicit a very mild discomfort on iliopsoas, but not to the degree where I think it is injured, maybe just overworked. Does anyone have thoughts on how to progress?

Thanks for any thoughts,
Missi

Thank you Laurie for the blog response. It was a lateral suture repair. I will try to add in the exercises you mentioned. The only pain response I am getting repeatedly is from the L/S region and clears with massage and stretching. I will keep you posted!

Hey Missi,
So in addition to the leg strengthening mentioned in the blog, add in some tail pulls to help the L/S.
Good luck!
