Oh that's awful Stella!
But it brings up a few different thoughts.
1) Not all surgeons are created equal. And as such, you can't put blind faith in the surgeon doing the best job and/or recognizing, finding, or admitting the problem. We had one surgeon tell an owner once that her dog had unmanageable arthritis after surgery and that the best he could suggest was to euthanize if the dog was still in pain. Fortunately, the client found us, we suspected a meniscal tear and got her in to see a different surgeon. Meniscal tear removed. Problem solve. (yes arthritis would eventually set in... but that wasn't the dog's problem!).
2) When and how do you push for a second opinion? Indeed, we are caught between a rock and a hard place. We don't want to step on any toes or offend anyone, but sometimes we just KNOW that what is being said, offered, or done is flat out wrong! I think we owe it to the client to suggest that they get a second opinion.
3) I always let the owners know that I am there for them, no matter what. And I think they appreciate that.
Thank you for the update Stella!
