Re: Jogging with a puppy

I never answer in terms of distance a puppy can run because if varies widely with breed and condition of dog, type of terrain etc. Instead I stick with general principals in terms of slow increase in exercise volume over time while monitoring for evidence of fatigue etc. I get most concerned with an...

Re: LumaSoothe Light Therapy

I was just commenting in a different thread that some clients have bought respectable lasers for $3000 CDN for personal use. I don't think a unit like that is practical for use in hospital as the low power means prolonged treatment time, but for owners treating their own pets it is an option.

Re: Toes

For clients buying a personal laser (where they don't care how long it takes to administer the therapy), you can get a decent unit for $3000 CDN. A unit like that would not function well in practice as therapy would be too time consuming.

LEH,

How effective do you feel ESWT is for LS disease? Are there specific Cx you feel it is indicated for?

Re: Toes

To me, that looks more like a soft tissue mineralization than it does a fracture (with all the disclaimer of jpeg resolution, no orthogonal view etc.).

Re: Two differing opinions for puppy

Although I can't comment on this space specifically about the correct course of action (because I haven't seen the patient), in general I apply the algorithm when considering any diagnostic test: what are the severity of the symptoms? how likely is the test to change the treatment plan? how invasive...

Re: Toes

PEMF and laser would be my choices to accelerate healing. ESWT skin over a bone without soft tissue interposed doesn't always go over well, so any foot ESWT I do is through the pad. Preventing re-injury is the other concern, so I would have a soft bandage on it while outside to avoid additional insu...

Re: Hyperextension of the tarsi

Has coxofemoral disease been ruled out? I see a strong correlation b/w hip issues and tarsal hyperextension, (albeit particularly in BMD). I had another bilateral CrCL case that stopped hyperextending the hocks once the stifles were surgerized.

Re: Scuffing nails on the front leg

Agree with LEH to look at the ribs and thoracic spine. I would also add that the leg the patient scuffs on is not necessarily the problem leg. eg: is it a failure of the scuff leg to properly flex, or is it a failure of the contralateral limb to fully extend and give the scuff leg the clearance it n...
