Re: Tarsal Hyperextension after FHO for CHD

I saw a young Collie several years ago between 10-12 months of age that had bilateral tarsal hyperextension. I consulted you on it Laurie! We used neoprene braces from Therapaw, did mostly land based therapeutic exercises, especially gastroc stengthening and he eventually recovered and got out of th...

Re: post bilateral patella surgery

I agree with Laurie - this is kind of like Loving on the Stairs/Couch which I do introduce at 2 weeks post-op. The fact that she CAN do it is great. Jumping up and down or up onto a couch however is a big NO NO as well as NO stairs yet and of course NO OFF LEASH outside, NO running ..... Caroline Ga...

Re: Hip Dysplasia - conservative or Sx

Great question Laurie. Most dogs young or old will undergo some remodeling at the osteotomy site over time. Almost all of the dogs that I've done are young (< 1 year) small dogs. Of course many of the toy breeds do stop growing by about 9 months of age. I have not had a problem with this regrowth ca...

Re: Hip Dysplasia - conservative or Sx

I suspect that this dog given the age and being a small breed has asceptic necrosis of the femoral head. This is a very painful condition, because the cartilage is often displaced exposing underlying subchondral bone. This can be genetic or due to trauma causing disruption of blood supply to the fem...

Re: Lat Patellar Lux after TPLO

Coming from the surgical perspective, I would be very disappointed to see this in one of my TPLO cases. Certainly when rotating the plateau you have to be careful not to create any kind of varus or valgus or move the plateau medially or laterally. There is a technique where you can move the tibial p...

Re: Arthroscopy question

It is a very small "needle" scope - in humans they can use it on you awake and see directly into your joint. It is for diagnosis (i.e. ACL partial tears or meniscal tears), so you don't need an MRI; it is not used for treatment. Can also be used for second look arthroscopy to assess treatment of par...

Re: Anaesthetic & degenerative myelopathy

I think that for longer dental or orthopedic procedures on especially large breed, older dogs, that an underlying neurologic problem can be exacerbated due to immobility for a long period of time and repositioning under anesthesia. Nothing is proven with this, but in general I do caution owners of l...

Re: SDF Luxation

From the surgical perspective, I recommend surgery. I do not believe this is a case for conservative management. Surgery has a good to excellent prognosis for this. Sometimes it is the conformation of the calcaneus that is making it slip. I would at least advise referral to a local surgeon to evalua...

Re: Long Term Effects of CCL Surgery?

Reconstruction of the ACL as is done in humans may become possible in dogs in the future - I think that is what we are striving for - everything done minimally invasively. Intra-articular repairs however, require ligament to heal into bone which requires very careful protection of the repair immedia...

Re: Long Term Effects of CCL Surgery?

Hi Everyone, Laurie, I love your response to this excellent question. As a boarded surgeon that has done all 3 techniques I am still on the fence about what is best! I don't do TTA's anymore because I just did not see the patients do as well as the TPLO, and the TTA is definitely not as versatile. I...
